The Faculty of Psychology, Chulalongkorn University's eighteenth faculty, was established on 7 July 1996 according to the Royal Decree for the Establishment of the Faculty of Psychology, announced in the Royal Gazette on 11 July 1996.

The study of psychology started in Chulalongkorn University when the Department of Education, which was then attached to the Faculty of Arts, included courses in psychology in its curriculum. Later in 1957, when the Department of Education was upgraded and became the Faculty of Education, the teaching of psychology became the responsibility of the Division of Educational Research, a part of this newly-established faculty. In 1961, the Faculty of Education offered a Master's Degree program in Educational Psychology and Guidance for the first time. After that, the teaching, learning and the research in psychology developed rapidly and expanded to include a wide range of subject areas. In 1963, the Division of Psychology was founded, and later it was upgraded to the Department of Psychology, according to the Chulalongkorn University Act in 1979. The department was responsible for the teaching of courses in various fields of psychology to undergraduate students and graduate students in the Master's and doctoral programs. The doctoral program in Educational Psychology, in particular, was the first Ph.D. program ever offered by Chulalongkorn University.

At present, the Faculty of Psychology offers both undergraduate and graduate programs and teaches general education and elective courses in psychology to students in all faculties across Chulalongkorn University.

What is psychology?
Psychology is a scientific study of human behavior and mental processes so that they can be explained and monitored and result in improved quality of life and society.

Responsibility
In addition to providing academic services in the form of lecturing and training and conducting psychological research, the Faculty of Psychology is responsible for the following undergraduate and graduate programs:

1. Undergraduate Programs
     1.1 The major in psychology has been offered to undergraduate students who are working toward their B.S. in Psychology since 2002.
     1.2. The minor in psychology is offered to undergraduate students from other faculties who take at least 18 credit hours of designated psychology courses.
     1.3 General education and elective courses are offered university-wide to interested undergraduate students

2. Graduate Programs
     2.1 At present, the Faculty of Psychology offers four Master's programs.
          2.1.1 M.A. in Counseling Psychology. Established in 1995, this program concentrates on producing graduates in Counseling Psychology to teach and conduct research studies in tertiary educational institutes as well as to give psychological counseling services in schools, colleges, mental health clinics, and other organizations both in private and government sectors. in Counseling Psychology.           2.1.2 M.A. in Social Psychology. Established in 1996, this program concentrates on producing graduates in Social Psychology to teach and conduct research studies in tertiary educational institutes as well as to apply knowledge in the field to issues regarding social problems.
          2.1.3 M.A. in Developmental Psychology. Established in 1996, this program concentrates on producing graduates in Developmental Psychology to teach and conduct research studies in tertiary educational institutes as well as to work in organizations that provide service to children, minors, and the elderly. The evening program in M.A. in Developmental Psychology has been offered since 2004.
          2.1.4 M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Established in 2001, this program concentrates on producing graduates in Industrial and Organizational Psychology to teach and conduct research studies in tertiary educational institutes as well as to work in organizations to enhance their workforce. The evening program in M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology will be offered in 2005.

3. Doctoral Program
In 2001, the Ph.D. program in Psychology was established. Three areas of specialization are offered as Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology, and Developmental Psychology.

Work in the field of psychology
There are a number of professions, both in government agencies and private sectors, that holders of the degrees in Psychology can attend. For example, they may work in a hospital, a university, or a research institute. Additionally, they may enter the field of advertising and public relations, personnel administration, or training. Finally, they may provide psychological counseling to personnel in work units or organizations as well as work as a freelance according to their specialization and interests.
